Union Government
The Vice-President shall hold office for a term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office: Provided that - (a) a Vice-President may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office; (b) a Vice-President may be removed from office by a resolution of the Council of States passed by a majority of all its then members and agreed to by the House of the People, after at least fourteen days' notice; (c) a Vice-President shall, notwithstanding the expiration of his term, continue to hold office until his successor enters upon his office.
The Vice-President serves a five-year term, can resign by writing to the President, can be removed through a resolution that must pass the Rajya Sabha by majority and then be agreed to by the Lok Sabha, and continues in office past the formal end of term until a successor takes over.
Removing a Vice-President requires majority support in the Rajya Sabha (which the Vice-President chairs) plus agreement from the Lok Sabha - a different, somewhat less demanding process than the two-thirds-majority impeachment required to remove a President.
