Union Government
(1) In the event of a vacancy in the office of President by reason of death, resignation, removal, or otherwise, the Vice-President shall act as President until a new President enters upon office. (2) When the President is unable to discharge functions owing to absence, illness or any other cause, the Vice-President shall discharge those functions until the President resumes duties. (3) While so acting, the Vice-President has all the powers and immunities of the President and is entitled to the President's emoluments, allowances and privileges.
If the President's office becomes vacant or the President is temporarily unable to serve, the Vice-President steps in and exercises full presidential powers until a new President takes office or the sitting President is able to resume duties.
India has seen sitting Vice-Presidents act as President for brief periods following a President's death in office, ensuring continuity of the office while a fresh presidential election was held within the constitutionally mandated timeframe.
