Criminal Intimidation, Insult, Annoyance and Defamation
(1) Threatening someone (by any means) with injury to their person/reputation/property, or to someone they care about, intending to cause alarm or to coerce them into doing/not-doing something they're not legally bound/entitled to do, is "criminal intimidation" - including threats to a deceased person's reputation that would upset someone connected to them. (2)-(4) Punished with up to 2 years, fine, or both (base); up to 7 years, fine, or both (threatening death, grievous hurt, arson, a serious offence, or imputing unchastity to a woman); plus an additional up to 2 years for making the threat anonymously or while concealing one's identity.
This is the general criminal-threats offence - directly relevant to virtually every extortion and coercion-based scam, with a significant enhanced penalty for the most serious threat categories and an ADDITIONAL penalty specifically for anonymous or identity-concealed threats, a common tactic in scam calls and messages.
This is directly relevant to threatening scam calls and messages: someone who anonymously threatens a victim with serious harm to coerce a payment faces both the enhanced threat penalty AND this section's additional anonymity-specific penalty, reflecting how scammers' use of anonymous channels is itself treated as an aggravating factor.
