Directive Principles
The State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.
This directs the government to work towards a single, common set of personal laws - covering things like marriage, divorce, and inheritance - that would apply to all citizens regardless of their religion, replacing the current system where different religious communities largely follow their own separate personal laws. This remains one of the most debated and, at a national level, not-yet-implemented directives in the Constitution.
Goa is currently the one Indian state that already has a Uniform Civil Code (inherited from Portuguese-era law applicable to all its residents regardless of religion); proposals to extend something similar nationwide remain an active and contested legal and political debate.
