Directive Principles
The State shall endeavour to promote voluntary formation, autonomous functioning, democratic control and professional management of co-operative societies.
The government should encourage cooperative societies - organisations owned and run jointly by their members - to form voluntarily, operate independently, be democratically controlled by their members, and be professionally managed. This directive was added by the 97th Constitutional Amendment in 2011.
Well-known cooperative institutions like Amul (the dairy cooperative) and various credit and agricultural cooperatives across India reflect the kind of member-owned, democratically-run institutions this directive encourages.
