Union Government
With the President's prior consent, a retired Supreme Court (or Federal Court) Judge, or a qualified retired High Court Judge, may be requested to sit and act as a Supreme Court Judge, with the allowances the President determines and all the jurisdiction and powers of a sitting Judge - but no one can be required to do so without their consent.
This lets the Supreme Court bring back retired judges on a voluntary, temporary basis to help with its workload, giving them full judicial powers while so sitting, but only if the retired judge agrees to it.
This provision allows the Court to draw on experienced retired judges' expertise during periods of heavy case backlog, without requiring a permanent new appointment.
