General Provisions
The punishments under this Sanhita are: (a) Death; (b) Imprisonment for life; (c) Imprisonment, rigorous (with hard labour) or simple; (d) Forfeiture of property; (e) Fine; (f) Community Service.
This lists the complete menu of punishments Indian criminal courts can impose under the BNS. Notably, "Community Service" is a genuinely new addition compared to the old IPC - a modern, rehabilitative sentencing option that didn't exist in India's previous general criminal code.
This is why some minor offences under the BNS can now result in a community service sentence - an option simply unavailable to judges under the old IPC, reflecting a modernisation of India's sentencing options.
