Nothing is an offence if done in the exercise of the right of private defence.
This is the foundational statement of India's right to self-defence (and defence of others/property) under criminal law - genuine, lawful private defence is not a crime, with the detailed scope and limits spelled out in the sections that follow.
Physically stopping someone from stabbing another person, using only the force reasonably necessary to stop the attack, is protected under this foundational private-defence provision rather than being treated as a criminal assault.
