False Evidence and Offences Against Public Justice
Hiding/destroying, or making illegible/unusable, a document/electronic record one may be lawfully compelled to produce as evidence, intending to prevent its use, is punished with up to 3 years' imprisonment, up to ₹5,000 fine, or both.
This criminalises destroying documentary or digital evidence specifically to prevent it being used in legal proceedings.
Deleting an electronic record or shredding a document specifically to prevent it being produced as evidence in a case where you'd otherwise be legally compelled to hand it over is an offence under this section.
