Contempts of the Lawful Authority of Public Servants
Giving a public servant information known/believed false, intending or knowing it likely to cause that servant to act wrongly, or to misuse their lawful power to injure/annoy someone, is punished with up to 1 year's imprisonment, up to ₹10,000 fine, or both.
This criminalises deliberately feeding false information to officials specifically to trigger official action that harms an innocent third party - a tactic sometimes used to weaponise official power against someone through false complaints.
Falsely informing a Magistrate that a specific police officer engaged in misconduct, knowing this to be false, specifically to get that officer wrongly dismissed, is an offence under this section.
