Contempts of the Lawful Authority of Public Servants
Being legally bound to furnish information, and instead furnishing information known/believed false, is punished with up to 6 months' imprisonment, up to ₹5,000 fine, or both - rising to up to 2 years, fine, or both where the false information concerns an offence or catching an offender.
This is the affirmative-lying counterpart to Section 211's omission offence - actively giving false information rather than staying silent - again with an enhanced penalty for lying about crime-related matters.
A village watchman who deliberately misdirects police investigating a planned robbery, by falsely claiming the suspects went a different way, commits this enhanced false-information offence.
