Offences Against the Human Body
Assault/criminal force without grave and sudden provocation from the victim is punished with up to 3 months' imprisonment, up to ₹1,000 fine, or both - the provocation mitigation doesn't apply if self-sought, given by lawful public-servant action, or given during lawful private defence.
This is the baseline punishment for ordinary assault or criminal force (without any injury actually resulting), with the same provocation-mitigation carve-outs used elsewhere in the chapter.
An unprovoked shove or threatening gesture, without any grave provocation from the other party, falls under this baseline assault/criminal-force offence.
