Offences Against the Human Body
(1) Intending or knowing likely to cause grievous hurt, and actually causing grievous hurt (of any kind, even if not the specific kind intended), is "voluntarily causing grievous hurt". (2) Punished with up to 7 years' imprisonment plus fine (except under Section 122(2)'s provocation exception). (3) If the hurt causes permanent disability or a persistent vegetative state, punishment rises to rigorous imprisonment of 10 years to life. (4) A group of 5+ people causing grievous hurt on identity-based grounds (race, caste, community, etc.) each face up to 7 years plus fine.
This escalates punishment significantly for the specifically-defined "grievous" category of hurt, with an even higher penalty tier for permanently disabling injuries, and the same group/mob-liability provision as murder for identity-based group attacks causing grievous hurt.
This mirrors the murder provision's group-liability rule (Section 103(2)) for grievous hurt caused by identity-motivated mob violence - every participant faces liability, not just whoever inflicted the specific injury.
