Offences Against the Human Body
Culpable homicide not amounting to murder is punished with life imprisonment, or 5-10 years' imprisonment plus fine (if death or death-likely-injury was intended), or up to 10 years plus fine (if death was merely known to be likely, without intent to cause it or death-likely injury).
This sets the punishment for the lesser category of unlawful killing that doesn't meet murder's stricter criteria (for example, a killing during sudden provocation) - still serious, but with a lower minimum sentence range than murder itself.
A killing committed during a sudden fight without premeditation, which qualifies for one of Section 101's exceptions to murder, would instead be sentenced under this less severe provision.
