Fraudsters posing as officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate, and Delhi Police contacted the victim and threatened him with arrest over a false money laundering case involving Rs 68 million.
The scammers claimed that the victim's identity details and fingerprints had been misused. Using forged official documents, they coerced the retired man and his daughter into transferring a total of Rs 29,17,668 under the pretext of verification and national security secrecy.
Following a complaint, the cybercrime police launched an investigation and arrested two 27-year-old men in Ameerpet on Saturday, October 17. Investigators stated that the suspects worked with an absconding accomplice to route the extorted funds through multiple bank accounts, cash deposit machines, and cryptocurrency transactions to conceal the money trail. Authorities seized two iPhones and linked the syndicate to 16 similar cases across the country.
