Wazed Ali Choudhury Opposes Ghanakanta Gogoi’s Police Encounter, Says He Should Have Faced Trial

An opposition MLA in Assam, Wazed Ali Choudhury, publicly criticised an alleged police encounter in which the prime accused in a high-profile shooting was killed. The accused, identified by reports as Ghanakanta Gogoi, was wanted in connection with a firing incident at a hotel in Guwahati's Bora Service area that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. While condemning the violent actions of the accused, the legislator maintained that the individual should have faced trial in a court of law and received legal punishment rather than being killed by police.

The lawmaker argued that extrajudicial killings undermine the judicial process and deprive society, as well as the accused, of a lawful trial and the chance for the perpetrator to face formal justice. According to police reports, the accused was killed in firing in the Sivasagar district while allegedly attempting to escape while being transported for another case. Meanwhile, reports noted that the families of the shooting victims expressed gratitude to the state government and police following the death, stating they hoped the victims would find peace.
