Excise constable shot dead by liquor smugglers in Bihar’s Nalanda

An excise constable was shot dead by suspected liquor smugglers during a late-night operation in Bihar's Nalanda district, according to police reports. The incident occurred near a flyover on the Pawapuri-Silao highway when an excise department team attempted to intercept a liquor-laden pickup van. Officials stated that a suspected liner allegedly provided logistical support to the smugglers and opened fire on the pursuing team, critically injuring the constable.

The operation had been launched after the Excise Intelligence Bureau headquarters in Patna received a tip-off about a large consignment of liquor being transported into Nalanda. A special team from Patna, along with local excise officials, chased the vehicle. During the ensuing confusion, the attackers managed to flee the scene with the pickup van.

The injured constable was initially taken to a medical facility in Pawapuri and later transferred to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, where he passed away during treatment. Authorities subsequently sent the body for a post-mortem examination.

Following the incident, local police and excise officials launched intensive searches and raids along the highway and adjoining roads to track down the attackers who remained at large. Investigators noted that liquor manufacturing, storage, sale, and consumption are strictly banned under the state's prohibition law enacted in April 2016.
