Union Government
(1) While the office of Speaker is vacant, the Deputy Speaker (or, if that office is also vacant, a member appointed by the President) performs the Speaker's duties. (2) During the Speaker's absence from a sitting, the Deputy Speaker, or a person determined by the House's rules or by the House itself, acts as Speaker.
This mirrors Article 91 for the Lok Sabha: if the Speaker's office is vacant or the Speaker is simply absent from a sitting, the Deputy Speaker (or another designated backup) steps in to preside.
If the Speaker is unwell and misses a Lok Sabha sitting, the Deputy Speaker presides over that day's proceedings in their place.
