Union Government
Every President and every person acting as President or discharging the functions of the President shall, before entering upon his office, make and subscribe in the presence of the Chief Justice of India (or, in his absence, the senior-most available Supreme Court Judge) an oath or affirmation to faithfully execute the office of President, and to the best of their ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law, and devote themselves to the service and wellbeing of the people of India.
Before taking office, the President must take a formal oath - administered by the Chief Justice of India - promising to defend the Constitution and serve the wellbeing of the people of India.
Every incoming President's swearing-in ceremony is conducted by the Chief Justice of India, reflecting the judiciary's role as custodian of the Constitution that the President is swearing to uphold.
