Union Government
The President shall be elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of - (a) the elected members of both Houses of Parliament; and (b) the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States.
The President is not directly elected by ordinary citizens. Instead, an electoral college made up of elected Members of Parliament (both Houses) and elected members of State Legislative Assemblies votes to choose the President.
When India holds a presidential election, ordinary voters do not cast a ballot for President directly - instead, sitting MPs and MLAs across the country cast weighted votes on behalf of the electorate that elected them.
