Directive Principles
The State shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and to safeguard the forests and wild life of the country.
The government should work to protect and improve the environment and safeguard the country's forests and wildlife. This directive was added by the 42nd Amendment in 1976, reflecting growing environmental concern at the time.
Laws like the Wildlife Protection Act, the Forest Conservation Act, and the Environment Protection Act all trace back to this directive - and courts frequently cite Article 48A together with the right to life under Article 21 to expand environmental protections.
