Fundamental Rights
Notwithstanding anything in the foregoing provisions of this Part, Parliament may by law indemnify any person in the service of the Union or of a State or any other person in respect of any act done by him in connection with the maintenance or restoration of order in any area within the territory of India where martial law was in force, or validate any sentence passed, punishment inflicted, forfeiture ordered or other act done under martial law in such area.
If martial law is ever imposed in an area (a rare, extreme measure), Parliament can pass a law protecting officials from liability for actions taken to restore order during that period, or validating actions/sentences carried out under martial law - overriding the Fundamental Rights that would otherwise apply.
This provision has been used very rarely in Indian history and is separate from the more commonly-discussed Emergency provisions (Articles 352-360) - it specifically concerns actual martial law, not a general national emergency.
