Union Government
When the office of Chief Justice of India is vacant, or the Chief Justice is unable to perform duties due to absence or otherwise, the President appoints one of the other Supreme Court Judges to perform those duties.
If there's a gap in the Chief Justice's office - whether from a vacancy or the sitting Chief Justice being temporarily unable to serve - the President appoints another sitting Supreme Court judge to act as Chief Justice in the meantime.
This ensures the Supreme Court always has someone performing the Chief Justice's administrative and ceremonial functions even during a brief transition between one Chief Justice's retirement and their successor's appointment.
