Local shop scams occur in the most ordinary transactions of daily life — buying vegetables, medicines, electronic goods, or jewellery. These scams are systematic and widespread, affecting millions of Indians daily. While individual losses may seem small, across millions of transactions they represent a significant and organised form of theft.
Weight tampering: vegetable/grocery scale shows more weight than actual product weighed.
Duplicate medicines: chemist sells expired, fake, or substandard medicine.
Fake branded electronics: duplicate phones, chargers, earphones sold in fake branded packaging.
Short-change fraud: cashier returns less change than owed.
Home service inflation: plumber/electrician fabricates or exaggerates the fault to increase bill.
