Fake Government Scheme & Document Scams

What is this scam?

Fake government scheme scams impersonate official central and state government programs — PM Awas Yojana, Kisan Samman Nidhi, Ujjwala Yojana, free ration schemes — to collect registration fees, Aadhaar details, or bank account information. Document update scams exploit fear of losing services — electricity, gas, ration card, bank account — to extract OTPs and personal data. These scams are particularly dangerous because they target rural Indians and elderly people with limited digital literacy.

How it works — step by step

   SMS or WhatsApp message claims: 'Your electricity connection will be disconnected tonight — update KYC immediately.'

   Victim clicks the link — enters their name, Aadhaar number, bank account details, and OTP.

   Fraudsters use these details to take over accounts or take loans in the victim's name.

   PM Yojana variant: caller claims to be from government and offers ₹6,000 Kisan Samman benefit — asks for bank account and OTP to 'transfer' the money.

   Income Tax refund variant: fake IT department email or call claims ₹15,000 refund is pending — asks victim to 'verify' by sharing account details and OTP.

   PAN/Aadhaar update variant: 'Your PAN/Aadhaar will be blocked in 48 hours if not linked — share OTP to complete linking.'

🚩 Red flags — warning signs

• ⚠️Government services are NEVER disconnected via WhatsApp message or SMS link — always through official written notice
• ⚠️Any link asking for Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details outside of official government portals
• ⚠️Government schemes do not require an 'agent' or 'processing fee' to access benefits
• ⚠️Income Tax refunds are credited automatically — the IT department never calls to ask for bank OTP
• ⚠️Aadhaar-PAN linking is done on the official NSDL or Income Tax portal — not via SMS link
• ⚠️Gas or electricity utility companies do not ask for OTP to update KYC
