AI-generated fake images used for blackmail — a rapidly growing crime
Scammers use artificial intelligence to generate fake nude or sexually explicit images of real individuals — using photographs taken from social media profiles, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Facebook. These fabricated images are then used to extort money from the victim under threat of sending the images to their family, employer, and contacts. Unlike traditional sextortion, this crime can target anyone whose photograph is publicly available online.
Scammer downloads publicly available photographs of the target from social media — even professional headshots from LinkedIn are used.
AI software generates convincing fake nude or explicit images using the target's face.
Scammer contacts the target via WhatsApp, Instagram DM, or email with a sample of the fake image and a threat: 'Pay ₹X within 24 hours or I send this to everyone you know.'
If victim pays, demands escalate — payment does not stop the blackmail.
Some scammers send images to victims' contacts regardless of payment.
