Sellers on second-hand marketplaces were told that the buyer would 'send' money using a QR code and that the seller only needed to scan and approve.
In reality the QR flow was a collect request or payment authorisation that caused money to leave the seller's account.
The fraud spread quickly because it exploited poor understanding of UPI push-versus-collect behaviour.
