Attempts to Commit Offences
Abetting an offence punishable with death or life imprisonment, if the offence isn't actually committed and no other punishment is specified, is punished with up to 7 years' imprisonment plus fine - or up to 14 years plus fine if the abetted act causes hurt to anyone.
This sets a serious default punishment specifically for abetting the most serious category of crimes (death/life-imprisonment offences), even if the crime is ultimately unsuccessful - reflecting how seriously the law treats attempts to instigate the gravest offences.
Someone who instigates a murder that ultimately isn't carried out still faces up to 7 years' imprisonment for that abetment alone under this section - rising to 14 years if the instigation results in some hurt to the intended victim even without their death.
