Offences Relating to Documents
(1) Making a false document/record intending to cause public/private damage or injury, to support a claim/title, to cause someone to part with property or enter a contract, or intending/facilitating fraud, is "forgery". (2)-(4) Punished with up to 2 years, fine, or both (base); up to 7 years plus fine (intended for cheating); up to 3 years plus fine (intended or likely to harm someone's reputation).
This sets forgery's penalty tiers based on the forger's purpose - notably, forgery specifically intended to facilitate cheating (fraud) carries a significantly higher penalty than the base offence.
Forging a document specifically as a tool to defraud someone out of money or property carries a much higher penalty (up to 7 years) under this section than forgery for other purposes, reflecting the seriousness of fraud-enabling forgery.
