Offences Relating to Elections
Incurring/authorising election-related expenses (public meetings, advertisements, publications, etc.) without a candidate's written authority is punished with a fine of up to ₹10,000 - unless retroactively approved by the candidate in writing within 10 days for expenses under ₹10.
This ensures election expenditure is properly authorised and accountable to the actual candidate, preventing unaccountable third-party spending in a candidate's name.
A supporter who spends significant money on campaign advertising without the candidate's written authorisation can be fined under this section.
