Offences Against the Human Body
(1) Causing hurt with intent or knowledge of likelihood is "voluntarily causing hurt". (2) Voluntarily causing hurt (except under Section 122(1)'s provocation exception) is punished with up to 1 year's imprisonment, up to ₹10,000 fine, or both.
This is the basic assault-causing-injury offence with a defined, relatively modest penalty for ordinary (not grievous/aggravated) hurt caused intentionally or knowingly.
Ordinary physical altercations resulting in minor injuries, without any of the aggravating factors covered by later sections (like dangerous weapons or extortion), fall under this baseline offence.
