Account hijacking, impersonation and message-based fraud
WhatsApp and social media scams exploit the platforms most Indians use for daily communication. WhatsApp account hijacking โ where scammers take over someone's account and immediately message all their contacts asking for money โ is one of the most common cyber crimes in India. Impersonation of friends, family members, and celebrities causes billions of rupees in losses annually.
WhatsApp OTP hijack: scammer sends message pretending to be WhatsApp support claiming your account needs verification โ asks for the 6-digit OTP that arrives. Once shared, scammer takes over the account.
From the hijacked account: scammer messages all contacts โ 'I'm in an emergency, please send โน5,000 urgently.'
Social media impersonation: scammer creates a duplicate Facebook/Instagram account with the victim's name and photos โ sends friend requests to their network and asks for money.
Fake celebrity/influencer accounts promise giveaways, investment tips, or exclusive deals โ collect money or data.
Forwarded message scams: fake news, fake government notifications, and fake prize messages spread through WhatsApp groups to collect registrations and fees.
