You cannot win a lottery you never entered
Lottery and prize scams are among the most persistent frauds in India, evolving from postal scams to SMS, WhatsApp, and telephone calls. Victims are told they have won a large cash prize โ often โน25 lakh to โน1 crore โ in a lottery, KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati), Amazon lucky draw, or government scheme. To claim the prize, they must pay a 'processing fee,' 'income tax advance,' or 'clearance charge' โ which they will never see again.
Victim receives an SMS, WhatsApp message, or call: 'Congratulations! You have won โน25 lakhs in KBC/Amazon Lucky Draw/Government Lottery.'
Caller provides a fake 'lottery number,' 'winner ID,' and sometimes a convincing WhatsApp forward with official-looking branding.
Victim is asked to pay a 'processing fee' of โน1,000โโน10,000 to 'release' the prize.
After first payment, new requirements emerge โ 'income tax advance,' 'government clearance,' 'bank transfer fee.'
Each payment is followed by another until the victim runs out of money or realises the fraud.
Prize never arrives. Scammer disappears.
